The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to present a comprehensive report to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days after concluding a critical round of mediation talks between the Kusaasi and Mamprusi factions at the Manhyia Palace.
Monday’s meeting marked a significant milestone in efforts to resolve the long-standing Bawku conflict. The atmosphere around the Palace was filled with jubilation as members of both factions celebrated what many described as the most encouraging progress so far in the peace process.
Minor skirmish quickly contained
The otherwise peaceful gathering saw a brief disturbance when a Mamprusi supporter, in a moment of exuberant celebration, reportedly struck a vehicle belonging to the opposing side. Security officers swiftly intervened to restore calm and prevent escalation.
Otumfuo’s leadership praised
President Mahama had tasked the Asantehene with leading the mediation following heightened tensions in the Bawku area. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, known for his seasoned role in national and international peace-building efforts, is said to have navigated the discussions with firmness, neutrality, and deep cultural insight.
Sources close to the process indicate that the Asantehene will soon submit a detailed brief on the resolutions reached and the commitments made by both factions.
Next steps
The Presidency is expected to study the report and outline the next phase of actions geared toward achieving lasting peace, stability, and reconciliation in Bawku.
