Asantehene to Deliver Final Ruling on Bawku Mediation Today

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to announce the final ruling in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy mediation process today, Monday, December 1, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace.

President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene earlier this year to lead renewed efforts aimed at resolving the decades-old dispute, which has fuelled recurrent violence and instability in the Bawku municipality.

Otumfuo’s involvement dates back to April, when he first engaged representatives of the feuding factions between April 28 and 30 to reopen channels of dialogue. Although deliberations were briefly suspended, they resumed on May 13. During this session, the Asantehene observed that the mediation had contributed to a period of relative calm in the embattled area.

For years, Bawku has endured waves of violence, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property, and repeated imposition of curfews. The conflict has disrupted livelihoods, deepened divisions between communities, and drawn national attention to the urgent need for durable peace.

According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s sitting marks the culmination of months of intensive consultations and peace-building engagements.

Many residents, stakeholders, and observers are hopeful that the anticipated ruling will lay the foundation for lasting stability, reconciliation, and socio-economic progress in the conflict-prone enclave.
