Akosua Serwaa to Appeal High Court Ruling in Widowhood Case

Akosua Serwaa, the first wife of the late highlife legend Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has announced plans to challenge the High Court’s dismissal of her request to be recognised as the musician’s only legal wife.

The court recently rejected her assertion that her marriage to the musician—performed under ordinance—constituted the only valid marriage, which would have prevented Daddy Lumba from legally marrying any other woman.

Speaking to masemtvgh.com on Monday, December 1, 2025, her lawyer William Kusi revealed that a notice of appeal would be filed before the end of the day. He insisted the High Court erred in its ruling, arguing that the evidence presented — including documentation and admissions from the defendants — sufficiently supported Akosua Serwaa’s claim.

Reacting to public criticism surrounding the handling of the case, Kusi dismissed suggestions that the marriage certificate required certification by a German authority before it could be accepted by the court. He maintained that Ghanaian law recognises several avenues for tendering such documents, and that the team complied fully with legal requirements.

The case has drawn widespread public attention, reigniting debate over marital recognition, widowhood rights, and the complexities surrounding customary versus ordinance marriages in Ghana’s legal system.
