Ghana shifts from economic mismanagement to prudent fiscal management – Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has hailed the 2026 Budget as evidence of a significant turnaround in Ghana’s economic management, asserting that the country has moved from what he termed “criminal handling” of public finances to a more prudent and responsible approach within a single year.

Speaking during the budget debate in Parliament on Thursday, November 27, Ayariga commended the Mahama administration’s fiscal direction, describing the budget as growth-oriented and reflective of careful stewardship of national resources.

“This budget is designed to stimulate growth. It demonstrates prudent management of the country’s resources to achieve development objectives,” he said.

He added that the nation has shifted from severe mismanagement to a regime of fiscal prudence, recalling the president’s earlier description of the economic situation he inherited as a “crime scene.”

The comments followed the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama. Themed “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation,” the budget outlines the government’s strategy to move Ghana from economic stabilisation toward expansion.

Dr. Forson highlighted improvements in key macroeconomic indicators, including restored fiscal discipline, a stabilised cedi, declining inflation, and increased investor confidence. He described these gains as part of a national “reset,” signalling a shift from recovery to transformation, resilience to productivity, and stability to job creation.

“Confidence is returning. Ghana is rising once more—strong, stable, and full of hope,” the Finance Minister declared.
