Former Minister for Works and Housing and seasoned lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has advised delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be discerning as they prepare to elect the party’s next presidential candidate.
Speaking to supporters at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region, he cautioned them against selecting any individual whose behaviour could disgrace Ghana on the global stage. He specifically warned against choosing a leader who might “insult world figures at the United Nations.”
Mr. Atta Akyea stressed that Ghana’s international image must remain respected, especially at major diplomatic gatherings like the UN General Assembly, where tact and diplomacy are essential. He noted that the country’s next leader should demonstrate composure, maturity, and statesmanship when dealing with international counterparts.
“Let us not make the mistake of electing someone who will insult world leaders when he goes to the United Nations,” he reiterated.
The NPP will hold its flagbearer election on January 31 ahead of the 2028 general elections. Of the five aspirants, the leading contenders are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong.
Although Mr. Atta Akyea did not directly mention anyone, many believe his comments were aimed at Mr. Agyapong.
