Police Council recommends two-year contract extension for IGP Yohuno

The Police Council has recommended a two-year contract extension for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ahead of his mandatory retirement in December 2025.

According to Myjoyonline sources, the proposal has been submitted to President John Mahama for approval.

If endorsed, the extension will enable IGP Yohuno to continue steering the Ghana Police Service as it advances ongoing reforms, modernisation programmes, and critical national security operations.

Mr Yohuno, who was appointed IGP by President Mahama in consultation with the Council of State on March 13, 2025, and sworn in a day later, replaced Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, a role he assumed in July 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The recommended extension, if granted, will allow the IGP to maintain continuity in leadership as the service undertakes key security and personnel development initiatives.
