SHSs to establish poultry and livestock farms soon – President Mahama

President John Mahama has announced a new policy that will require all senior high schools (SHSs) across the country to establish poultry and livestock farms as part of efforts to enhance food self-sufficiency in educational institutions.

The initiative, he said, will enable schools to produce their own meat instead of relying on the open market, thereby improving feeding quality and reducing costs.

President Mahama made the announcement during the 65th anniversary celebration of Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco) in Tamale, where he and the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, are both alumni.

“We are coming up with a policy—one where secondary schools will have a poultry farm and a livestock farm. So Ghanasco will be one of the schools selected,” he stated.

“We will establish a poultry farm here and a livestock farm so that you don’t have to go to the market to buy your meat. You take your meat from your own farm. And again, the headmaster will have no excuse when you go to the dining hall and there’s no meat in your food.”

The planned policy forms part of broader efforts to boost practical agricultural training in schools, promote self-reliance, and ensure a consistent supply of fresh meat for students.
