UG launches internal review after heated on-air clash between Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Domfeh

The University of Ghana has commenced an internal review following the circulation of a viral video showing a heated confrontation between two of its senior academics, Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr. George Domfeh, during a live broadcast on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, November 15.

The footage, which has dominated social media discussions and sparked debate within academic circles, captures a tense verbal exchange between the Political Science lecturer and the Development Economist. What began as a vigorous discussion on national issues quickly escalated into personal attacks, leaving many viewers stunned.

In a statement issued on Friday, November 21, the University confirmed that its internal mechanisms have been activated to assess the conduct of both academics. The review will be guided by the University’s Statutes (2024) and the Code of Conduct for Academic Senior Members (2011), which set out standards of integrity, respect, and professional behaviour for senior staff.

“The University of Ghana demands high standards of professionalism and integrity from all its faculty and staff,” the statement read. “We expect every member of the University community to uphold these values, not only in their official duties but also in their private and public engagements.”

The on-air altercation occurred during a segment known for its hard-hitting discussions on governance and public policy. However, the debate between Prof. Gyampo and Dr. Domfeh took an unexpected turn when disagreements escalated into a near-personal showdown.

The University stressed its commitment to protecting its institutional reputation and maintaining public confidence.

“Management remains firmly dedicated to safeguarding the reputation of the University and ensuring that the high standards expected of its members are consistently met,” the statement said. “The University will take the appropriate disciplinary actions based on the outcome of the internal review.”
