CID Asked to Investigate Galamsey Allegations Against Three Regional Ministers

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has received a formal petition calling for a probe into illegal mining allegations made against three regional ministers by a leading member of Democracy Hub.

The petition, dated November 19, 2025, was submitted by three Ashanti Region residents—Daniel Sasu Omari, Jerry James Suker, and Darren Jackson Pra. They asked the CID to begin an official investigation into accusations made by Wendell Nana Yaw Yeboah, the Head of Mobilisation at Democracy Hub, during a live interview on Aluta FM.

In the November 18 broadcast, Yeboah claimed that the Ashanti, Western, and Eastern Regional Ministers were directly involved in illegal mining activities.

The petitioners said the allegations, which quickly gained public attention, could “undermine public confidence, distort national discourse, and distract from efforts to combat illegal mining.”

They noted that President Mahama has demonstrated strong commitment to tackling galamsey, making such claims even more damaging if left unexamined.

Following widespread criticism, Yeboah later retracted the allegations and issued an apology, admitting that his claims were “not based on truth or evidence.”

Although the petitioners acknowledged the apology, they argued that it does not resolve the issue.

“Given the seriousness of the initial allegations, it is essential that the Ghana Police Service conducts an independent investigation,” they wrote.

The petition urges the CID to determine whether the false claims were made with malicious intent and to discourage future incidents that could harm the reputation of public officials and undermine the national fight against galamsey.

The group also requested that the CID invite all individuals linked to the broadcast—including the programme’s producer—to assist with investigations and provide any evidence that may confirm or refute the allegations.

They stressed that accusing three Ministers of State of participating in illegal mining “is an issue that cannot be ignored,” adding that a full investigation is needed “to protect the integrity of public office and maintain public trust.”

The petitioners expressed their confidence that the CID will handle the matter with appropriate urgency.
