President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to protecting the independence of Ghana’s judiciary, describing it as a constitutional safeguard vital to the country’s democratic system.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Jubilee House, President Mahama underscored the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship among the three arms of government.
He noted that while the executive, legislature and judiciary each operate independently, they must work together toward national development.
“The strength of our democracy depends on the delicate yet essential balance of powers among the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. Today, as President, I pledge my unwavering commitment to the independence of the judiciary,” he said.
President Mahama stressed that judicial independence should not be interpreted as a weakness or failure of the courts but rather as a constitutional necessity that protects every citizen, including the President himself.
He highlighted the need to safeguard the judiciary’s financial, administrative and institutional autonomy, adding that court decisions—whether popular or unpopular—must be respected and enforced as pillars of the rule of law.
President Mahama expressed confidence in Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s leadership, stating that under his stewardship, the judiciary will continue to uphold justice impartially and without fear or favour.
