Ideas, Not Money, Will Drive Ghana’s Transformation – Bawumia

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says Ghana’s future development will be driven by bold ideas and innovation, not the amount of money available to government.

Addressing supporters in Ketu South, the former Vice President argued that transformative progress comes from creative thinking and technology-backed reforms—principles he said guided many of the initiatives he spearheaded while in office.

“It is not the money in your pocket that will allow you to transform Ghana. It is the ideas in your head,” he said.

Digital Reforms Cited as Key Achievements

Dr. Bawumia highlighted several digital innovations implemented under the previous NPP administration, beginning with the rollout of the Ghana Card.

He explained that before the NPP took office, the National Identification Authority (NIA) had not issued the card to the public, and he was tasked with overseeing its nationwide implementation.

“We issued the Ghana Card, and Ghana today is one of the few countries in the world with a digital national ID of this kind,” he noted.

He also referenced his role in pushing through mobile money interoperability, a system that now allows users to:

  • Transfer funds across different mobile networks
  • Move money seamlessly between bank accounts and mobile wallets
  • Renew NHIS membership
  • Pay utility bills
  • Receive international transfers directly onto MoMo accounts

According to him, Ghana is the only African country with such an integrated and advanced mobile money platform.

MoMo Sector Job Creation

Dr. Bawumia further highlighted the massive expansion of the mobile money agent network.

“When we came, MoMo agents were 107,000. Now they are 900,000. We have created 800,000 jobs for MoMo agents.”

He described this as evidence of how innovation can directly stimulate employment and economic activity.

“Judge Me by My Work”

The NPP flagbearer hopeful urged Ghanaians to assess his leadership based on the systems he has helped build, arguing that his track record proves he can deliver transformational results even without full presidential authority.

“You have seen what I can do as Vice President without the power. If you make me president, I will bring ‘Abrokyire’ to Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia said his vision is to create opportunities in Ghana comparable to those abroad, making the country a place where citizens can prosper without travelling overseas.
