Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s National Chairmanship position in the upcoming national officers’ elections.
In a statement titled “Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of the New Patriotic Party,” Mr. Afoko said his decision follows broad consultations and strong encouragement from party supporters who are calling for renewed leadership.
“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party, I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman,” he said.
He explained that his return is driven by a commitment to restore the party’s founding values and democratic ethos.
“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our Party,” he noted.
Despite past controversies, Mr. Afoko emphasized his unwavering loyalty to the NPP and expressed readiness to help rebuild the party.
“While the journey has not been without its trials, I have always chosen to prioritise the unity and progress of the NPP above all else,” he stated. “My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future — one where our Party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people.”
He added that in the coming weeks he will engage the grassroots and share details of his leadership vision.
Paul Afoko was suspended as National Chairman in 2015 following a recommendation from the party’s Disciplinary Committee and approval by the National Executive Committee. His suspension was tied to allegations of working against the party’s electoral agenda ahead of the 2016 general elections and failure to honour invitations by the disciplinary body.
Afoko’s comeback bid now sets the stage for what is expected to be a heated contest as the NPP prepares for a crucial internal reorganization ahead of the 2028 general elections.
