Akufo-Addo hosts NPP presidential aspirants to promote unity ahead of primaries

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hosted all five New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants at his private residence in Nima, Accra, for a breakfast meeting aimed at fostering unity ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

The meeting held on Tuesday, October 21, and described as cordial and forward-looking, brought together the aspirants and senior party officials to reaffirm their commitment to a peaceful and issue-based internal contest.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Former President, the gathering was held to encourage a spirit of camaraderie among the aspirants and to underscore the importance of party cohesion as the NPP looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.

In his remarks, former President Akufo-Addo thanked the aspirants for honouring his invitation and praised them for their dedication to the party’s future.

He said he had worked closely with each of them and respected their individual contributions to the NPP and the country. He encouraged them to focus their campaigns on ideas and policies rather than personal attacks.

“My commitment is to the unity of the NPP, the credibility of the process, and to working towards an energised and united party ready to win the 2028 elections,” he said.

All five aspirants reportedly pledged to run clean campaigns and to support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer after the primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026. They also gave assurances that their campaign teams would maintain a positive atmosphere throughout the process.

Also present at the meeting were senior NPP officials including the Chairman of the Council of Elders, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang; Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey; General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong; Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; and former Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

The presidential aspirants in attendance were:

* Ken Ohene Agyapong
* Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP
* Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
* Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP
* Kwabena Agyei Agyepong

The meeting concluded with a call from the former President for party leadership to ensure a transparent and credible primary process, which he believes is key to uniting the party after the contest.

The statement was signed by Fatimatu Abubakar, spokesperson to the former President.
