Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Launches Bid for NPP General Secretary, Pledges to Revive Party Ahead of 2028

Former Minister for Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The announcement, made on her Facebook page on Monday, October 20—her birthday—called on party members and supporters nationwide to rally behind her vision to rebuild, unite, and strengthen the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“Dearest Patriots, I come to you on this day of my birth with genuine regards,” she began, acknowledging the party’s recent internal challenges but expressing confidence in its ability to recover. “A lot of water has passed under the bridge since our stormy face-off with ourselves and our base. We came out bruised… but as our great tradition has shown over the years, we will thrive.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful encouraged members to stay hopeful, describing the NPP’s current struggles as a necessary phase of renewal. “Scathed, we refuse to be burnt… and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready,” she affirmed.

The former Ablekuma West MP also criticized the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), referring to it as a “caretaker government” that, in her view, gained power through deceit and empty promises. “This caretaker NDC government is not there because they are preferred—they are there because they lied their way into power. But we will revive belief in our party and restore confidence in our mission,” she stated.

Promising to rebuild the party from the grassroots up, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said her leadership would focus on restoring unity, trust, and purpose among members. “From the polling stations through to the constituencies and regions, we will restore confidence in our party and unity among ourselves. That is the only dose we need to boot out this accident-of-a-government,” she declared.

Describing herself as “nurtured, proven, and prepared,” she pledged to lead the NPP’s reorganisation efforts with humility and dedication. “On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you—the fighter you have always known—to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government,” she said.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful concluded her declaration with a call for solidarity among party members, urging them to join her in the movement to reposition the NPP as the true agent of progress and development.

“Patriots, join me. Let us commit to the struggle, for with unity, God on our side, and the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome,” she said.
