Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal and Communication Team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has called for a renewed and professional investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, following the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue prosecution against the main suspect.
The Madina District Court on Tuesday, October 14, discharged Daniel Owusu Koranteng, who had been facing charges of murder and abetment of murder in connection with Suale’s killing. The discharge followed an advice from the Attorney General’s Office, which cited insufficient evidence to sustain prosecution.
Ahmed Suale, a key member of the Tiger Eye P.I. investigative team, was shot dead by unknown assailants in January 2019, a murder that sparked national outrage and international calls for justice.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, October 15, Lawyer Adawudu said while the Attorney General made the right call based on weak evidence, the investigation must not end there.
“This should be an eye-opener. We must go back to the drawing board and conduct a proper, professional investigation. This case should speak to the conscience of the investigators and authorities. We must improve the way we do investigations and be bold to speak the truth,” he said.
He lamented the lack of adequate resources and institutional backing for investigators, which often leads to what he described as “armchair investigations.”
“Some of the people at the top make things difficult for the younger ones. Investigators don’t get the needed support to travel and gather evidence. The system doesn’t have money for proper investigations,” he added.
Mr. Adawudu commended the Attorney General for exercising sound judgment in discontinuing a case that lacked merit.
“I commend the Attorney General for being bold. If the evidence cannot secure conviction, then it’s better to discontinue and avoid a shoddy job. But if new facts emerge, the suspect can still be brought back,” he noted.
He stressed that the quest for justice for Ahmed Suale must continue, urging authorities to demonstrate transparency and commitment in pursuing the killers.
“We need to reach a logical conclusion in this case so that such tragedies never happen again,” he concluded.
