Drop Bawumia to save NPP – Dickson Adomako Kissi urges delegates

A leading member of the Bryan Acheampong campaign team and former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reject Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming flagbearership election if the party intends to reclaim power in 2028.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Dr. Adomako Kissi likened Dr. Bawumia to the biblical Jonah, who had to be thrown overboard to save a sinking ship, suggesting that retaining him as the party’s leader could doom the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

“I didn’t really want to go there, but in the last primaries, he underperformed in the Greater Accra Region. Out of 34 seats, we won only two in the presidency,” he stated.

He claimed that support for Dr. Bawumia in Greater Accra has dwindled significantly, unlike the growing enthusiasm for Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who he said resonates better with the grassroots.

“Greater Accra is not responding to him like they are responding to Dr. Bryan Acheampong. And it’s not just my opinion—it’s the euphoria I’m observing on the ground,” he added.

Drawing a biblical analogy, Dr. Adomako Kissi remarked, “It gets to a point where, like Jonah, you have to remove the person sinking the ship to save it. That’s where we are now as a party.”

He further argued that the NPP’s disappointing performance in the last general election is proof that a major shake-up is needed. He urged delegates to emulate the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which replaced Haruna Iddrisu with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minority Leader to reposition the party strategically.

“The party’s deficit demands a radical change. I commend the NDC—when they realised they needed to win the Central Region, they made the tough call to replace Haruna Iddrisu. Haruna is a great politician, but they made that sacrifice to achieve electoral success,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election, is expected to begin a nationwide campaign tour on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, as part of his bid for the party’s flagbearership.
