Adwoa Safo did not betray NPP in Speaker election – Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has dismissed long-standing claims that former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted for him during the election that made him Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Mr. Bagbin was elected Speaker in January 2021 after a tense and chaotic voting process, which sparked speculation that one New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament had broken ranks to support him.

Following the incident, Adwoa Safo became the subject of widespread accusations within the NPP, with many alleging that she was the member who crossed party lines.

However, addressing the issue when the family of Apostle Kwadwo Safo paid a courtesy call on him in his office on Monday, October 13, Mr. Bagbin firmly denied the claim and cleared Adwoa Safo of any wrongdoing.

“I call her my daughter because when I first came to Parliament, she was a small girl. So, I began calling her my daughter even before she entered politics. But we belong to different political traditions,” Mr. Bagbin said.

He explained that his close and long-standing relationship with Adwoa Safo might have led to the public misconception.

“Because she is my daughter and we love each other, when I was contesting to be Speaker, they assumed she voted for me,” he clarified.
