The lead counsel for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has confirmed that his client is expected to be released today, Friday, October 10, 2025, barring any unforeseen challenges.
According to Mr. Appiah-Kubi, all bail conditions have been satisfied except for the transfer of Chairman Wontumi’s passport from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to the court registrar.
“We have fulfilled every bail requirement except for the transfer of his passport from EOCO to the registrar. EOCO officials have assured us that this will be completed tomorrow morning. So, all things being equal, we expect Chairman Wontumi to be released by then,” he said on Ghana Tonight with Alfred Ocansey on October 9.
Addressing his earlier criticism of how bail conditions can serve as a form of punishment, Mr. Appiah-Kubi reiterated that an accused person who has not been found guilty deserves freedom.
“When someone has not been convicted of any crime, they are entitled to their liberty. The court granted bail, but the delays in verification processes — such as property checks at the Lands Commission and valuation — often prolong the release,” he explained.
He argued that these procedures need urgent review to prevent unnecessary detention of individuals who have been granted bail.
“Even after bail is granted, you can still spend days in custody because of bureaucratic procedures. This undermines the right to freedom that the court’s ruling guarantees,” he said.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi further highlighted the financial burden associated with bail, particularly when high-value property is used as justification.
“For instance, if the bail value is GH₵20 million, the accused person might have to pay as much as GH₵200,000 — about 1% — which is unfair. Bail is not meant to serve as a penalty. The verification and evaluation processes make it both costly and tedious,” he emphasized.
He concluded by calling for a review of Ghana’s bail procedures to make them more efficient, affordable, and fair to accused persons.
