Rehabilitation works are currently underway on the Salaga–Kpandai road following severe damage caused by recent heavy rainfall that rendered key sections of the stretch impassable. The flooding left commuters and residents cut off for several days, disrupting transportation, access to essential services, and economic activities in surrounding communities.
In a swift response to the crisis, the Member of Parliament for Salaga-South, Hon. Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has partnered with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to initiate emergency rehabilitation works aimed at restoring access to affected areas. The intervention, which involves grading, filling, and compacting washed-out sections, is providing temporary relief while plans are advanced for a full-scale reconstruction of the road.
According to sources from the Roads Ministry, discussions are ongoing to ensure the main contractor returns to site soon to continue the comprehensive rehabilitation project. The MP’s office has also engaged local engineers to supervise the interim works and guarantee that the materials and methods used are sustainable in the short term.
As part of a follow-up and monitoring visit, the NDC Constituency Chairman, Mr. Haruna Abdul Aziz, and the Director of Special Projects, Mr. Mustapha Nafiu, visited the site earlier today to inspect the progress of the emergency works. The site foreman briefed them on the status of repairs, revealing that work is advancing steadily and is expected to be completed within the next three days.
During the visit, the constituency team interacted with residents and road users along the affected sections, assuring them that Hon. Hajia Zuwera remains committed to ensuring the completion of the project. They explained that the MP had personally lobbied relevant authorities to expedite the intervention and is closely monitoring the situation to prevent further deterioration.
Residents who spoke with the delegation expressed immense gratitude to the MP for her timely and proactive response. Many noted that her intervention had already brought significant relief to local transport operators, traders, and farmers who rely on the road to access markets and health facilities.
They, however, appealed to government to fast-track the process of bringing the main contractor back to site for a permanent reconstruction of the road, stressing that the current rehabilitation, though helpful, serves only as a temporary measure.
The Salaga–Kpandai road is a major link between communities in the East Gonja and Kpandai districts, playing a vital role in trade, agriculture, and socio-economic activities across the Savannah and Northern Regions. Its full rehabilitation is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and stimulate local development once completed.
