Bono Regional House of Chiefs Condemns Violence in Sampa Chieftaincy Dispute, Calls for Restraint and Due Process

The Bono Regional House of Chiefs has strongly condemned the recent violent disturbances in Sampa, Bono Region, which have resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property. The unrest, stemming from the protracted Sampa chieftaincy dispute, prompted an emergency meeting of the House on October 3, 2025, to address the escalating situation.

In a press statement signed by Principal Registrar David Bakuuroh Oswell on behalf of the President, the House expressed grave concern and deep regret over the events, attributing the turmoil to an alleged illegitimate process of registering a candidate’s name into the National House of Chiefs’ register.

According to the statement, the Bono Regional House of Chiefs had initially rejected the said chieftaincy declaration forms, citing their failure to meet the required standards. This decision was later contested in the High Court in Kumasi, which issued a Mandamus Order compelling the House to transmit the forms to the National House of Chiefs. The President and Registrar of the House were cited for contempt for initially failing to comply.

Despite subsequent compliance, the House now alleges that the President and Registrar unilaterally entered the name of Nana Sampa Gyaffa II into the national register, an action they describe as a “clear and flagrant violation” of the established procedures governing the registration of chiefs.

The statement emphasized that this unauthorized action lies at the heart of the ongoing conflict and urged all factions and residents of Sampa to remain calm. The House assured the public, particularly the people of Sampa and the Bonoman traditional area, that it is actively working to ensure a fair and expedited hearing of the paramount stool petition, which is central to resolving the dispute.

“The Bono Regional House of Chiefs is therefore appealing to all the factions and the good people of Sampa to exercise restraint in these trying times,” the statement concluded.

This latest development adds to the longstanding tension surrounding the Sampa chieftaincy matter, which has seen multiple legal and traditional contestations over rightful leadership.
