Six illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night when the miners were trapped underground. Rescue efforts, led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) alongside emergency services and local volunteers, are still underway amid fears that more people remain buried beneath the rubble.
After hours of frantic digging, six bodies were recovered, while four survivors were pulled out alive and rushed to hospital for treatment. The deceased have since been conveyed to the morgue.
Rescue operations have been hampered by water gushing from underground, which has slowed progress and raised concerns about the safety of emergency workers.
Confirming the incident, the Assembly Member for the Kasotie Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine, said efforts are ongoing to ascertain the exact number of people still trapped.
