President John Dramani Mahama is expected to swear in 21 new Justices of the Court of Appeal today, October 2, 2025, in a ceremony that will significantly strengthen the country’s judiciary.
Among the appointees is Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs. Known in legal circles as Justice Daniel Mensah, the Dormaahene has long combined his chieftaincy role with his judicial duties as a High Court judge.
The new judges, vetted and approved earlier this year, will expand the appellate bench, which currently operates divisions across the country. The Tamale division, for instance, serves the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, and Northern regions.
Prominent among the nominees is Justice Senyo Amedahe, a long-serving High Court judge in Koforidua, recognized for his rulings in the Ernest Kumi case, and Dr. Richmond Osei Hwere, a legal academic noted for his role in the Agradaa appeal proceedings. His siblings, Justice Apangano Achibonga and Justice Mariama Samo, also received elevation to the appellate court.
Others on the list include Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah, a former GIMPA law lecturer, and Justice Sheila Mintah.
