President Mahama to Swear in Dormaahene, 20 Others as Court of Appeal Justices Today

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to swear in 21 new Justices of the Court of Appeal today, October 2, 2025, in a ceremony that will significantly strengthen the country’s judiciary.

Among the appointees is Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs. Known in legal circles as Justice Daniel Mensah, the Dormaahene has long combined his chieftaincy role with his judicial duties as a High Court judge.

The new judges, vetted and approved earlier this year, will expand the appellate bench, which currently operates divisions across the country. The Tamale division, for instance, serves the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, and Northern regions.

Prominent among the nominees is Justice Senyo Amedahe, a long-serving High Court judge in Koforidua, recognized for his rulings in the Ernest Kumi case, and Dr. Richmond Osei Hwere, a legal academic noted for his role in the Agradaa appeal proceedings. His siblings, Justice Apangano Achibonga and Justice Mariama Samo, also received elevation to the appellate court.

Others on the list include Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah, a former GIMPA law lecturer, and Justice Sheila Mintah.

The full list of the 21 appointees to be sworn in includes:

  1. Justice Justin Dorgu

  2. Justice Daniel Mensah (Dormaahene)

  3. Justice George Boadi

  4. Justice Ayitey Armah-Tetteh

  5. Justice Senyo Amedahe

  6. Justice Olivia Boeng Owusu

  7. Justice Douglas Seidu

  8. Justice Ali Baba Bature

  9. Justice Mariama Samo

  10. Justice Abena Adzin Doku

  11. Justice Mary Maame Akua Yanzu

  12. Justice Jennifer Anne Myers Ahmed

  13. Justice John Bosco Nabarese

  14. Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah

  15. Justice Richmond Osei Hwere

  16. Justice Apangano Achibonga

  17. Justice Charity Akosua Asem

  18. Justice Enyonam Adinyira

  19. Justice Sheila Mintah

  20. Justice Bridget Kafui Antonio

  21. Justice Franklina Gesila Adanu

The appointment of the Dormaahene in particular is expected to generate national interest, as he continues to straddle the rare roles of traditional authority and judicial responsibility.
