The Volta River Authority (VRA) says it is on track to complete the relocation of the AMERI Power Plant to Kumasi by December 2025.
The second phase of the project involves transferring four remaining thermal units from the Western Region to Awomaso in the Ashanti Region. Once operational, the facility is expected to significantly improve power supply reliability across Kumasi, Ashanti, and northern Ghana.
VRA Chief Executive Officer, Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, described the project as “critical to enhancing supply stability” during an inspection of the Awomaso substation on Wednesday, October 1.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s Select Committee on Energy has expressed concern over the threat illegal mining poses to Ghana’s energy infrastructure. The Committee warned that encroachment on GRIDCo powerlines and major gas pipelines could jeopardize energy security if urgent action is not taken.
Deputy Ranking Member, Collins Adomako Mensah, called for stronger vigilance, stressing: “We cannot allow illegal miners and encroachers to get close to critical installations such as powerlines and gas pipelines.”
The Committee pledged to step up collaboration with ministries, agencies, and local authorities to safeguard installations. It also assured the VRA of support in addressing tax exemption challenges on imported equipment needed for the relocation project.
Acting Chairperson, Albert Nyakotey Tetteh, added that while the energy sector is currently stable, sustained investments will be required to secure its long-term future.
