Police Deploy Open-Source Intelligence, Forensics to Combat Cybercrime – Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that the Ghana Police Service is intensifying the fight against cybercrime with the use of modern digital tools, forensic science, and open-source intelligence.

Speaking at the launch of Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Accra on Wednesday, October 1, the Minister revealed that the Police Service, through its Digital Crime and Cybersecurity Unit, is now tackling a broad range of cases, including mobile money fraud, online impersonation, sexual extortion, and financial cybercrimes.

“The modern digital forensic lab has been equipped to examine seized devices such as mobile phones, computers, and storage media to produce credible evidence in court and secure justice for victims,” Mr. Mubarak explained.

He added that the Service is leveraging open-source intelligence and an international data-sharing platform to track and neutralise cyber threats before they escalate. This approach, he said, has exposed cross-border criminal networks and strengthened Ghana’s digital security.

Highlighting the scale of the threat, the Minister stressed that sustained investment remains essential.

“The fight against cybercrime demands continuous investment in equipment and knowledge. The Ghana Police Service is actively training investigators, forensic experts, and prosecutors in advanced digital techniques, working with academia, professional institutions, and international partners such as Interpol,” he noted.

According to him, these measures are building a new generation of cyber experts capable of staying ahead of increasingly sophisticated criminal networks.
