President John Dramani Mahama is set to host a crucial engagement with major civil society organisations (CSOs) on Friday, October 3, 2025, as part of renewed efforts to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The meeting, scheduled for 12:00 noon at the Jubilee House, will bring together government officials and civil society leaders to deliberate on practical and lasting solutions to the environmental and social crisis posed by galamsey.
In a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, the initiative was described as a platform for “frank and constructive dialogue between the Government and civil society on the menace of illegal mining, with a view to harnessing collective expertise, perspectives, and solutions to address this national challenge.”
The engagement comes amid growing public concern about the devastating effects of illegal mining on water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves. Many have called for more decisive and coordinated action to safeguard the environment and protect livelihoods.
Civil society’s involvement is expected to shape a more inclusive national response, as government seeks to balance environmental preservation, community welfare, and sustainable mining practices.
