The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has openly acknowledged that the party is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kodua said the NPP must confront its internal realities rather than pretend all is well.
“We cannot pretend. The NPP is in a very difficult and delicate situation,” he admitted.
With preparations underway for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries, he noted that internal contests naturally breed tension, mistrust, and backstabbing, stressing that the national leadership must remain firm and neutral to preserve unity.
Responding to claims that national executives have gone quiet, Kodua explained that he has had to assume additional responsibilities due to the ill health of National Chairman Stephen Ntim, while First Vice Chairman Smith Butey has also stepped in to support.
“As General Secretary, I must remain neutral because if not, by the end of everything, there will be problems,” he said.
He revealed that the party is working to expand the Electoral College and update the delegate register to ensure a credible polling album ahead of the primaries.
Addressing calls for sanctions against some party members, Kodua clarified that his office does not have the mandate to dismiss or punish individuals.
“It is not in my power to sanction or dismiss people from the party. Article 4 of the Constitution spells out the processes. My role is administrative,” he explained.
Drawing a football analogy, he added:
“As the General Secretary, we may be like Lionel Messi on the field, but without adequate support, you will be fruitless.”
Mr. Kodua reaffirmed his commitment to unity and discipline, calling on executives and grassroots members to work together to stabilise the party and rebuild ahead of the 2028 elections.
