The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disowned recent comments by its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Wontumi), and Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (alias Abronye DC), concerning the party’s upcoming January 31, 2026 presidential primaries.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on September 28, the party stressed that the remarks made by the two regional chairmen do not reflect the official position of the NPP.
Wontumi was reported to have suggested that the decision to hold the primaries on January 31 was intended to favour a particular aspirant, while Abronye allegedly claimed that he personally compiles the Bono Regional album and would prevent certain individuals from voting.
The NPP, however, firmly rejected these claims, clarifying that no individual, regardless of rank or position, has unilateral control over the compilation of polling station albums. The party explained that the process is governed by strict compliance procedures, and the National Secretariat will soon issue clear guidelines to guarantee the integrity, credibility, and fairness of the exercise.
“The decision to hold an early congress is intended solely to provide the party with sufficient time and strategic advantage to reorganise, reposition, and recapture power in 2028,” the statement said, emphasising that the January 31 date was arrived at by the National Council after exhaustive deliberations in the supreme interest of the party.
The party also urged stakeholders, especially polling station executives, to disregard the misleading remarks and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and internal democracy in all electoral activities.
