The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has congratulated the University for Development Studies (UDS) on its groundbreaking triumph at the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup, marking the first time in the tournament’s history that an African university has claimed the prestigious title.
In a statement issued on September 28, FASU described the victory as a moment of “immense pride” for both Ghana and the African continent.
“On behalf of the entire African university sports family, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the University for Development Studies, and the wider Ghanaian university sports community on your historic victory,” the statement read. “This achievement is a source of immense pride not only for UDS and Ghana, but for Africa as a whole.”
A Continental Breakthrough
UDS’s dramatic win in the tournament final has been celebrated as a transformative milestone for African university sports, showcasing not only the team’s exceptional athleticism but also the strong leadership of the university, the dedication of its coaches and players, and the unwavering support of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).
FASU noted that the victory has secured additional qualification slots for African teams in the 2026 edition of the competition — a development it described as a “true milestone” for the continent’s representation on the global stage.
“Beyond winning the trophy, your success has secured additional slots for African teams in next year’s edition, opening greater opportunities for our continent to shine even brighter,” the statement added.
Recognising Key Figures
The federation also paid special tribute to key individuals who contributed to the historic success, including UDS Vice-Chancellor Professor Seidu and Head Coach Tanko Ibrahim, for their leadership and commitment to excellence.
“We salute you, your students, and the entire UDS community for flying the African flag so high. May this victory inspire even more growth, confidence, and excellence in university sports across our continent,” FASU stated.
The win has drawn widespread praise across Ghana and Africa, with sports analysts calling it a defining moment that could spark a new era of competitiveness and visibility for African universities on the world stage.
