New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and presidential hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of inconsistency in his commentary on Ghana’s economic crisis.
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia reminded party supporters that the NPP government had consistently explained the country’s economic downturn from 2022 onwards as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine war.
He argued that Mahama rejected this explanation during the 2024 elections, blaming the crisis instead on the government’s alleged mismanagement.
“I have read that President Mahama, in an address in New York, admitted that prices of goods and services increased in Africa because of the economic challenges, and that over a decade of poverty reduction efforts were thwarted by the two-year pandemic. This shows he knew the truth, but he didn’t say the same during the election period,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The former Vice President maintained that the NPP had been transparent in identifying the real causes of the crisis, unlike the opposition NDC.
He expressed confidence that Ghanaians would acknowledge the truth and reward the NPP in the 2028 general elections, assuring that the party is focused on delivering sustainable economic growth.
“By God’s grace, we will all see the truth, and I believe the NPP will be voted for in 2028 to bring economic development,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia is currently touring the Eastern Region to consolidate grassroots support ahead of the next election cycle.
