Good Causes Funds Used for Atta Mills Institute Anniversary – GHC50,000 Paid During Akufo-Addo Era

The Atta Mills Institute, founded by former presidential aide Koku Anyidoho, received GHC50,000 from the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) Good Causes Foundation to sponsor activities marking the 10th Anniversary of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

The sponsorship was approved during the administration of Ex President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, under the leadership of then NLA Director-General Samuel Awuku.

The allocation has raised eyebrows, given that the Good Causes Fund was established under Section 2(3) of Act 722 to provide support for the needy, orphans, the aged, and destitute children—not to underwrite political or memorial events.

Critics argue that while psychiatric hospitals struggled with basic logistics and orphanages relied on charity to survive, millions from the fund were redirected to elite institutions, political projects, and state-linked celebrations.

The Atta Mills Institute’s share adds to a growing list of beneficiaries—including political think tanks, high-profile award ceremonies, and even celebrity projects—fueling concerns that the fund was used as a political tool rather than a social intervention.
