The National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) Good Causes Foundation, established to support orphans, the aged, and the destitute, disbursed GHC200,000 to the Rebecca Foundation for the Annual First Lady’s Women’s Day celebrations.
The Foundation, led by former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, was among high-profile beneficiaries of the fund in 2021, despite the law mandating that such resources be channelled to the needy and vulnerable.
Critics say the funding reflects a troubling trend where the NLA diverted money from its core mission to underwrite events and projects linked to political elites and wealthy institutions.
This allocation comes against the backdrop of underfunded psychiatric hospitals and orphanages in Ghana, which rely heavily on private donations to stay afloat.
The disbursement has raised fresh concerns over how the Good Causes Foundation, under then-Director General Samuel Awuku, became a cash cow for the well-connected rather than a lifeline for society’s most vulnerable.
