Akwapim North Member of Parliament, Sammi Awuku, has accused the John Mahama-led administration of using intimidation tactics and the selective application of the law to suppress opposition voices.
Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” demonstration in Accra on September 23, 2025, Mr. Awuku condemned what he described as a worrying trend of harassment and injustice.
“Today, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The selective application of the rule of law and the laws of our country is sickening,” he stated.
Unequal Treatment of Political Actors
Mr. Awuku cited instances where senior members of the ruling party allegedly received lenient treatment despite making inflammatory remarks, while opposition leaders faced harsh repercussions for less serious comments.
“You have a Vice Chairman of the ruling party making incendiary statements and threatening harm, yet he is only invited for tea or coffee and granted bail,” Awuku noted.
“But when a regional chairman of the opposition makes remarks the police deem offensive, he is detained and given draconian bail conditions.”
Youth Urged to Stand Firm
The Akwapim North MP praised the resolve of young NPP members for standing up against what he called harassment and intimidation, pledging that the party would not allow its leaders to be silenced.
“I’m proud that the NPP youth have risen to resist oppressors’ rule and to speak against injustice, harassment, and the deliberate gagging of opposition leaders. This, we will not allow,” he declared.
Mr. Awuku reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to defending democratic freedoms, warning that any attempt to stifle dissent will be fiercely opposed.
