Lawyers for the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, have issued a formal demand for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to withdraw its directive ordering the Vice-Chancellor to step aside.
In a strongly worded letter dated September 19, 2025, and copied to the Minister of Education, UCC’s Chancellor and Council Chair, and the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana, Prof. Boampong’s legal team described GTEC’s action as unlawful and contemptuous of a standing court order.
The lawyers argue that GTEC’s letter mirrors an earlier attempt by a former UCC Council Chairman to remove the Vice-Chancellor via text message—an action that is currently the subject of an ongoing legal dispute at the Cape Coast High Court.
The court on October 8, 2024, granted an injunction barring the University’s Governing Council and other stakeholders from initiating any removal or suspension processes against Prof. Boampong pending final determination of the case. A subsequent attempt by GTEC to overturn the injunction at the Supreme Court was dismissed on February 5, 2025.
The lawyers further cited constitutional provisions that allow the employment of persons above 60 years under certain conditions, as well as UCC’s own rollover policy and statutes, as legal grounds for Prof. Boampong’s continued stay in office.
“It is surprising that you have written a letter taking a decision that suspends our client’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor,” the lawyers stated. “Your actions not only disrespect the court’s orders but also sidestep the statutes of the University.”
The legal team demanded an immediate withdrawal of GTEC’s directive, warning that Prof. Boampong will continue to perform his duties as Vice-Chancellor in accordance with the court’s ruling.
Failure to comply, they cautioned, would trigger further legal action to enforce the court’s authority.
