Calm Returns to Kukurantumi as Police Resume Operations – MP

Police operations have resumed in Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region after a brief withdrawal following violent disturbances over the weekend.

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Nana Ampaw Kwame Addo-Frempong, confirmed the development on Monday, September 22, 2025, assuring residents that calm has been restored.

Speaking on The News, the MP explained that although the Kukurantumi Police Station was temporarily closed, officers have now returned and are actively maintaining order.

“I’m in Kukurantumi as we speak, and I can tell you the Kukurantumi station is a substation. The main Police District Command is in Tafo, just five minutes away, and there’s also a police post in Osiem. As I speak to you now, there is police presence even in Kukurantumi. The entire station is being guarded, everything is calm, and I don’t want people to panic,” he said.

Mr. Addo-Frempong added that security authorities are expected to provide further details on the ongoing investigation into the incident.

“It happened over the weekend. We’ll have a proper meeting tomorrow with the Regional Command and the District Police Command to determine timelines for completing investigations,” he noted.

Background

The unrest was triggered by the death of Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, who was arrested for unlawful entry and stealing. He died while receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital, sparking violent clashes between residents and police. The confrontations led to the temporary closure of the local police station and the withdrawal of officers before calm was restored.
