Retire Torkornoo Formally to Protect Her Entitlements – Ansa-Asare Urges Government

Legal educationist and founder of MountCrest University College, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has advised government to formally retire Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from the Supreme Court to ensure she receives her full benefits and entitlements.

Speaking at the 8th Congregation of MountCrest University College on Saturday, September 20, Mr. Ansa-Asare said the former Chief Justice’s removal from office should be followed by a proper retirement process to safeguard her rights.

“My advice is that the former Chief Justice be formally retired as a justice of the Supreme Court so that she can take a hard-earned entitlement,” he stated.

He explained that Justice Torkornoo was invited to respond to petitions solely in her capacity as Chief Justice, not as a Justice of the Supreme Court, raising concerns about the fairness of the process.

“She was invited to answer petitions for her removal as Chief Justice, not as justice of the Supreme Court, and in that I think that we administered common law rules oblivious of equitable principles,” he added.

Mr. Ansa-Asare emphasised that Ghana’s legal system rests not only on common law rules but also on equitable principles, which must guide decisions affecting the rights and entitlements of public officers.
