President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York, USA, to lead Ghana’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), which officially opens on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
A statement from the presidency on Sunday, September 21 confirmed that President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s address to the Assembly on Thursday, September 25, outlining the country’s priorities on global peace, economic development, and climate resilience.
Key Engagements
Beyond his main address, President Mahama will participate in high-level side events in his role as the African Union’s Champion for Financial Institutions.
He is scheduled to host two major sessions focused on Africa’s economic and institutional development, reinforcing calls for stronger continental financial systems and reforms in global finance.
The President’s itinerary also includes bilateral meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, several heads of state, and influential global leaders, including the President of the Rockefeller Foundation.
He will also engage with the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce to promote trade and investment opportunities in Ghana.
In a historic move, President Mahama is set to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ, symbolising Ghana’s drive to attract foreign investment and highlight its economic potential.
First Lady’s Role
First Lady Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama is part of the delegation and will represent Ghana at key events organised by the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).
She is expected to deliver the keynote speech at a World Vision International prayer service dedicated to children’s welfare worldwide.
