The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, has revealed an interesting trend in Ghana’s political landscape — rival party supporters appear to have strategic preferences for the opposing camp’s flagbearer choices.
According to him, NDC voters would rather see Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lead the NPP, while NPP voters prefer Johnson Asiedu Nketiah (“General Mosquito”) to lead the NDC.
Mr. Dankwah explained that many NDC supporters believe Dr. Bawumia would be easier to defeat in a general election. This perception is linked to the economic challenges and rising cost of living under the previous NPP administration, where he served as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team.
On the flip side, NPP supporters reportedly view Asiedu Nketiah as a weaker contender in a national election compared to other NDC heavyweights. His long service as General Secretary, while valuable for party organisation, is not traditionally seen as a direct path to the presidency, making him appear less formidable beyond the NDC base.
The analysis suggests that strategic voter preferences are shaping the internal contests for flagbearer positions in both parties. It highlights:
A potential vulnerability for Dr. Bawumia within the NPP, given perceptions of his electability.
A challenge for Asiedu Nketiah, who, despite his prominence, may be seen as less threatening by NPP supporters.
Dankwah concluded that the flagbearer contests in both the NDC and NPP go beyond internal politics, as they are also influenced by how rival voters perceive the strengths and weaknesses of possible candidates.
