President John Mahama has called on African nations to prioritise strategic investments in transport infrastructure as a key step toward deepening inter-African trade and reducing dependence on external shipping routes.
Speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra after receiving credentials from newly accredited High Commissioners and Ambassadors, President Mahama observed that African goods are sometimes routed through Europe before reaching other African destinations, a practice he said undermines the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and delays regional economic integration.
“This slows down trade among ourselves and weakens the very essence of AfCFTA. We need deliberate investment in road, rail, air, and maritime networks to ensure our goods move directly and efficiently across the continent,” he stated.
During an interaction with the Kenyan High Commissioner to Ghana, President Mahama highlighted the importance of coordinated strategies that not only facilitate trade but also improve regional security.
He further disclosed Ghana’s intention to deepen bilateral ties with Kenya, particularly by tapping into the East African nation’s expertise in tourism development. Mahama expressed optimism that closer cooperation will open new opportunities in tourism and strengthen people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
The President stressed that modern, integrated transport systems are critical for Africa’s economic independence, adding that improved connectivity will accelerate industrialisation, enhance competitiveness, and create sustainable jobs across the continent.
