Railway Workers Union to Strike Over 12-Month Salary Arrears

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana), has announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike and peaceful picketing on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, over 12 months of unpaid salaries.

In a letter to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, dated September 15, 2025, the Union described the salary arrears—dating back to October 2024—as a major source of hardship, with many workers suffering broken homes, health complications, and disrupted education for their children.

Despite repeated appeals, the Union noted that no negotiations or mediation efforts had been initiated by the Ministry of Transport or other authorities, as required under the Labour Act. It warned that if no concrete steps are taken by September 22, it will act under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act.

The planned protest will involve workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa. They will march from the Ministry of Transport to Parliament, then to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and finally end at the TUC-Ghana headquarters.

The Union assured police that the demonstration will be peaceful and requested security support to safeguard participants and the public. Copies of the notice have been sent to the Chief of Staff, the Speaker of Parliament, the National Labour Commission, and other relevant bodies.
