Poverty, Not Cost of Living, Is Ghana’s Biggest Threat – Adutwum

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has argued that poverty—not the high cost of living—is Ghana’s most pressing challenge.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on September 16, the former Education Minister said Ghana’s transformation will remain out of reach unless poverty is tackled boldly and innovatively.

“Ask the average Ghanaian about our greatest challenge, and many will say the cost of living. But in reality, the biggest threat we face is poverty, and we must confront it directly,” he stated.

Reflecting on Ghana’s history, Dr. Adutwum said the country has missed several opportunities for growth. He contrasted Ghana’s stalled progress with Singapore’s rise, noting that while Ghana had abundant natural resources in the 1960s, Singapore focused on education—especially STEM—and innovation to lift its people out of poverty.

He stressed that his presidential ambition is rooted in fighting poverty through a reformed education system that nurtures innovators, critical thinkers, collaborators, and effective communicators.

“My vision is for Ghana to reimagine education so we can approach our long-standing challenges with fresh ideas and practical solutions,” he said.
