NPP to proceed with Sept 23 protest despite Abronye’s release

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed that it will go ahead with its planned demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, despite the release of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Abronye was granted GH¢50,000 bail on Monday, September 15, after spending a week in police custody on charges of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace. His legal team had argued that his health condition had deteriorated while in remand.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, insisted that the protest goes beyond Abronye’s detention.

“We’re protesting against the government’s continued action for over seven to eight months. We’re demonstrating against the principles and conduct, not necessarily the capture of Abronye DC. We are protesting against the abuse of power, police/national security harassment, and intolerance of the NDC government,” he stated.

He stressed that the party views Abronye’s release as insufficient to address what it describes as persistent harassment and intimidation of its members.

“This does not cure the problem, and we will not put a stop to the demonstration. The demonstration will go unabated on September 23. Subsequent to that, other protests will follow. We have noticed that it is quite an intentional action being taken by the government, and we’re going to be intentional about our response,” Mr. Mustapha added.

The police have been formally notified of the party’s intention to stage the protest.

Abronye was first arrested on Monday, September 8, after the police accused him of making statements deemed likely to disturb public peace. He was later remanded by the court to allow further investigations before being granted bail.
