Several major transport unions in Accra have declared plans to go on strike on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in protest against what they call the unlawful takeover of land reserved for lorry stations by private developers.
The protesting unions include the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Concerned Drivers Association, Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, GPRTU Deputy National PRO Samuel Amoah said the alleged encroachment — particularly at the Accra-CMB lorry station — has disrupted operations and forced drivers to load passengers at unauthorised locations.
He noted that the situation has also pushed traders onto the streets, worsening traffic congestion and heightening safety risks for commuters and pedestrians.
Mr. Amoah warned that the development poses a danger to both drivers and traders and called on the government to act swiftly to reclaim the affected land.
He stressed that the CMB Lorry Park has long been a critical part of the city’s transport network, supporting drivers and traders across the country, but is now on the verge of being lost entirely to private developers.
“We are pleading with the government to save what is left of the lorry park and restore it to us. Tomorrow, by God’s grace, we will lay down our tools, go on strike, and present a petition to the President,” he declared.
The unions say Tuesday’s strike is intended to send a strong message to authorities to protect transport infrastructure and the livelihoods tied to it.
