Wonder Madilo, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, has criticised a recent ruling in the Abronye case, describing it as flawed and overreaching.
The comments follow the remand of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Boffoe, popularly known as Abronye, on September 12, 2025, for one week by an Accra Circuit Court. He faces charges of publishing false news and offensive conduct likely to disturb the peace, stemming from television remarks about the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and past NDC meetings.
In his ruling, the judge referenced George Orwell’s Animal Farm, suggesting some individuals are above the law, a point made in relation to Abronye’s comments about IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, September 15, Madilo argued that the judge overstepped his bounds in trying to appear “strong,” citing past rulings where he remanded political figures’ associates.
“This judge has a history of controversial rulings. Previously, he remanded an NDC activist for insulting former President Akufo-Addo, and he also remanded Chairman Wontumi’s radio presenter. Such actions now appear excessive,” Madilo said.
He added that the ruling highlights concerns raised by President John Mahama about the overreach of some state institutions, stressing the need for accountability and fairness in the justice system.
