Mahama open to declaring state of emergency on galamsey – Kwakye Ofosu

Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says President John Mahama has not ruled out declaring a state of emergency to deal with illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Kwakye Ofosu explained that the president views a state of emergency as a last resort, to be used only if current strategies fail.

“The president has indicated that conventional measures are being deployed and are showing results. But if the situation demands it, a state of emergency may be considered,” he said.

He noted that such a move would involve suspending existing laws and adopting drastic measures, which could inconvenience citizens, hence the need for strong justification before taking that path.

According to him, Mahama believes some progress is already being made and would only resort to extraordinary measures if absolutely necessary.

Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the government recognises the severity of the galamsey menace and has already rolled out interventions to tackle it.

“Since becoming president, he has done everything necessary to ensure we confront galamsey. The government fully appreciates the concerns of Ghanaians and understands the urgency of the issue,” he added.
