Atta Akyea slams Dominic Ayine, says theatrics don’t equal competence as A-G

Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for former Signals Bureau Chief Kwabena Adu Boahene, has criticised Attorney-General Dominic Ayine over his handling of corruption-related investigations into past government officials.

Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu, Atta Akyea accused Ayine of preferring media drama to legal substance, saying, “I have never seen an Attorney-General who equates theatrics with competence. If you truly believe in the law, you go to court, not hold press shows.”

He challenged the Attorney-General’s claims about a private Bureau of National Communications (BNC) account allegedly used to acquire UK property, stressing that Ayine has failed to provide evidence such as the vendor, cost, and timeline of the purchase.

According to him, all expenditures made by Adu Boahene during his tenure can be explained, noting that they fall under national security spending and will be justified in due time. On the allegation that GH¢39 million was diverted into private accounts, he insisted the funds were accounted for, though details would shock many Ghanaians once disclosed.

Atta Akyea also revealed that he had spoken with former National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, describing him as a key figure who understood Adu Boahene’s actions.

Meanwhile, the Accra High Court has set October 17 to decide on a motion by Adu Boahene’s lawyers to suspend his trial, pending an appeal. His legal team argues that the prosecution has withheld crucial documents, but Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem Sai maintains that the materials requested are irrelevant and not in the state’s possession.

Adu Boahene, his wife Angela Adjei Boateng, and two others are facing 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering of GH¢49.1 million, willfully causing financial loss, and abuse of public office.
