The African Paralympic family is gearing up to play a decisive role in shaping the future of global para sport as the countdown begins to the 22nd International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea.
On Saturday, September 27, 2025, elections will be held for the IPC Governing Board — a turning point that will influence the direction of the Paralympic Movement for years to come.
Africa’s Voice, Africa’s Vision
Ahead of the polls, the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC), led by President Samson Deen, will host a virtual engagement session on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. The session will allow African National Paralympic Committees, media, and sports stakeholders to interact directly with the two confirmed candidates for IPC President — Bae Dong Hyun and Andrew Parsons.
President Deen said Africa is determined to back a leader who truly understands and delivers on the continent’s aspirations.
“Africa will support a leader that speaks our language and delivers on promises that uplift our region. We will fact-check every commitment because the future of African para athletes depends on it,” he emphasized.
A Call for Inclusion and Support
For years, African athletes have faced steep costs, often traveling long distances to qualify for international competitions. Now, the AfPC is demanding fairer opportunities, including:
Expanded qualification pathways within Africa.
Stronger regional competitions to showcase local talent.
Inclusive systems to empower athletes with disabilities across all regions.
“Africa is not asking for charity,” Deen said. “Unity and inclusion are the foundation of a stronger Paralympic Movement. We need partners who believe in our potential.”
Strategic African Conference in Seoul
On September 26, 2025, a day before the elections, President Deen will convene an African Conference in Seoul. The goal: to align and strengthen Africa’s collective position before the crucial vote.
One Continent, One Voice
As the IPC elections draw near, Africa’s message is clear: the continent seeks a future where para athletes can dream, train, and succeed without barriers of geography, cost, or exclusion.
By uniting around a shared vision and demanding accountability from leaders, Africa is stepping forward with confidence, courage, and unity.
