Beg IGP to Free Abronye – Lawyer Martin Kpebu Urges NPP

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to intervene for the release of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, and later remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for one week to give prosecutors more time to complete their investigations.

Speaking on Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe on Friday, September 12, Kpebu argued that the case against Abronye involves a minor offence that does not justify keeping him in custody. He maintained that the NPP chairman poses no flight risk and should be granted his freedom while the legal process continues.

“This is a small offence that somebody in the position of a regional chairman is not likely to abscond,” Kpebu said. “If senior figures in the NPP go and beg the IGP, this case can be withdrawn. He cannot refuse if they beg. This is not a serious case that warrants keeping him in custody for one more week.”

He further suggested that the current Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has past ties with the NPP, having previously served as Deputy IGP under former President Akufo-Addo, which could influence a favourable resolution if the party steps in.

Kpebu therefore appealed directly to the NPP’s leadership to act quickly, insisting that keeping Abronye behind bars over a minor offence sets a worrying precedent.
