Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has alleged that his recent arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was not about financial crimes but a politically driven attempt to silence him.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, September 12, Akpaloo claimed his detention was linked to comments he made after the August 6 helicopter crash, in which he blamed government negligence for poor road safety.
“Exactly…because when the helicopter crash happened, I passed a comment about the fact that they’ve neglected our roads and people are dying. They are not paying attention. That triggered all these. It’s not like I’ve done anything wrong,” he stated.
The LPG leader insisted that the charges against him lack legal foundation. “It was like, let’s find something to arrest him so that everybody will know he has been arrested. I don’t believe they can even take this to court because there’s nothing to stand on,” he argued.
Akpaloo further disclosed that he had anticipated his arrest. “Appiah Stadium called me and said after they finish with the burial, they’ll come for me, so I had made my bag ready,” he recounted.
He was arrested at his Kumasi residence on September 3, 2025, and granted police bail under strict conditions, including a GH¢10 million bond with two sureties. After several days in EOCO custody, he was released on Thursday, September 11.
EOCO has confirmed that investigations into the alleged financial crimes are still ongoing. However, Akpaloo maintains that he has done no wrong and continues to cooperate with authorities.
