Police Arrest Man for Using Ambulance to Traffic Cannabis in Accra

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, for allegedly using a private ambulance to traffic large quantities of cannabis.

The arrest took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after sustained police surveillance. Officers intercepted a Hyundai Hiace private ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 in front of Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami.

According to a police statement, Tuanda was standing beside the ambulance when officers conducted a search and discovered several sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.

The search revealed 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected narcotics. Preliminary investigations indicated that the ambulance had been loaded with the substances in Kpando in the Volta North Region and transported to Accra for distribution.

Police said Tuanda admitted to engaging in the trade since last year. He reportedly purchased the Hyundai Hiace as a regular vehicle, fitted it with a siren, and branded it as an ambulance to evade detection. Prior to acquiring the vehicle, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for the same purpose.

Investigators also discovered that the suspect used the ambulance to transport dead bodies while simultaneously trafficking drugs.

The ambulance has since been impounded, and the seized substances have been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. Tuanda is being processed for court as investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against abusing legitimate service vehicles for illegal activities and reiterated its commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking networks.
