Former Minister of Trade and long-serving Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, has launched a scathing attack on New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants who, according to him, boast excessively about their wealth and financial contributions to the party.
Addressing party faithful on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in Adansi Asokwa during former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Hammond dismissed such aspirants as “latter-day braggarts” who were absent during the NPP’s formative struggles in the 1990s.
“When we wanted money to build the party, where were all these people who are now bragging and insulting us with their money?” he asked.
Mr. Hammond recalled that before the historic 2000 elections, the NPP was financially distressed, and it took the sweat, sacrifices, and personal resources of party stalwarts to transform the party into a formidable political force.
He argued that those now flaunting their wealth made fortunes only after the party came to power, yet they disrespect grassroots members who endured hardships to build the NPP.
“Many of our stalwarts dedicated themselves and committed their resources to make the NPP formidable and victorious, enabling us to form a government. Where were all these braggarts then? Today, thanks to those sacrifices, some have made enough money in government, and all they do is insult and disrespect the poor within the party,” he said.
Mr. Hammond maintained that the majority of the party’s base—ordinary members who are not wealthy—sympathise with and support Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for 2028.
“If they want to turn this party into the rich versus the poor, then we, the poor—who are in the majority—are for Dr. Bawumia,” he declared.
He concluded that unlike his wealthy rivals, Dr. Bawumia may not be the richest, but he has “what it takes to lead the party to victory in 2028.”
